Baby nursery: sewing crib bedding

As the "grandma to be", and mother to the "momma to be",
I offered to make the crib bedding for my grandbaby. We chose a few beautiful fabrics in a color palette to match the wall paint of the nursery. Then I found a pattern to follow, Simplicity 3795.
I ordered cream minky and jumbo ric rac from fabrics.com, as I could not find either in my travels around town.
The crib sheet was easy... basically a rectangle with the corners cut out and sewn together, and a casing made for the elastic, so the sheet will stay on the mattress.
I measured every "ric" and "rac" and pinned it on to the center fabric to make sure it would be straight and even.
You make 2 end sections and 2 side sections, sewing all the fabrics together, and hemming it up to cover up all the seam allowances. There is a bit of hand sewing involved on the sides, but the finished sections are all neat and clean, with no seams to fray out.
You then form the pleats, 1 on each endside, 3 on the side sections. When all 4 sections are done, you sew each one to a rectangle of fabric, that will go under the mattress.
It was a lot of cutting out, using all the different fabrics, and a lot of sewing to put it all together, 2 days worth!
But... the finished product is gorgeous! I'm so pleased and can't wait to try it on the crib!
Doing this project has inspired me to get back into sewing!
I hope I have inspired you to make something DIY too, whatever your talents may be!
Let me know what you've been up to and leave a comment below...

something to celebrate

I've talked about my friend Carolyn here before on my blog, and lastly in this post "people in our lives"Well... great news! The chemo that she has been going through, that has made her lose her hair once again, is working! The lung nodules are shrinking, one was even gone. She was so happy to get these results and we are all so happy for her!
Thank you all for all your prayers for her. Please keep it up. Clearly you all have the power, the power of prayer!

strength, hope, faith

Crib bedding progress

Ta Da! I made a Minky crib sheet today!
Hooray! One thing is done and ready for Grandbaby's nursery. All the fabrics are finally cut out and ready for sewing, and...
I've run all my errands for all the notions: batting, thread, elastic and anything else I need to complete this project.

I'm hoping to make real progress tomorrow on the dust ruffle... if...
I can stay on track and not get distracted!

Sunday update: I did stay on track and sewed most of the day (due to our still frozen temps and no desire to go outside), so... the dust ruffle is almost finished!
I love the fabric combination and I'm so excited to show y'all and to see it on Grandbaby's crib.

Monday update: The dust ruffle is finished and it turned out even more beautiful than I had imagined. I'll post about it after we put it on the crib so I can show you photos.

I'll keep you posted!

to progress!

This is some winter we're having isn't it?! Cold everywhere... it's even predicted that we'll get snow tomorrow evening here in Atlanta, just in time for rush hour, oh boy!
So "nesting" it will be! Inside where it's warm and cozy. The baby shower plans are worked out and sewing grandbaby's nursery bedding starts tomorrow. I have 2 machines and 2 seamstresses (Grad Girl and myself) so we should be able to give it a go and accomplish something (as long as I stay out of this blog world).
Here's to projects and progress!

Thursday update: No sewing yet. It took me quite awhile to make the final decision on what fabrics would go where... but the design is finished and I did start the cutting. Tomorrow I'll be back to it!
oh and btw... we didn't get all the snow they hyped about, but it is still flurrying!

it's going to be a busy two weeks...

...because that's when we're hosting Kelly's baby shower! So much to do in so little time. I can't share here (Kelly reads this blog, so the secret planning would be out), but I would like to share what we have in store for the nursery bedding. We're using four fabrics and a jumbo ric rac as trim. Here they are:

The blue fabric is the exact color of the wall paint, a soft sea-foam blue. We've paired it with an ivory Minky dot, a brown and cream Toile, and a stripe incorporating all the colors.

I've got to get to work sewing! And... finish planning the details for the shower! If you have any awesome baby shower game ideas, please let me know.

Yikes, sooooo much to do. At least with our cold weather, there's nothing to do outdoors!

our rockin' New Years Eve

We did something this new years that we've never done... we got dressed up and went out! Our Club always has a New Years Eve Party, and this year a bunch of the Gal Pals decided we needed to all go and dance the night away. So.We.Did!
It was great fun, and all went by so fast... stationed buffet dinner, open bar-anything you want-all top shelf, DJ in one room, live band in the other, casino with play money-so much fun-since I couldn't lose anything-and actually won big, breakfast after midnight,
and old and new friends to share the
evening with!!!
It was a great way to ring in 2010
and ps... we plan on going next year too!
Cheers! Here's to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010 for all!
