February 4th is ...

February 4 is World Cancer Day. Each year World Cancer Day is promoted to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) are joining forces today to make people more aware of the cures and advances made in the area of cancer as well as measures of prevention.

The theme for 2010 is “Cancer can be prevented too”, focuses on simple measures to prevent cancer such as:

no tobacco use

a healthy diet and regular exercise

limited alcohol use

protection against cancer-causing infections

Protecting against cancer-causing infections is one of the topics addressed under the umbrella of the 'Cancer can be prevented too' campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the fact that the risk of developing cancer can potentially be reduced by up to 40% through simple lifestyle changes and other control measures such as vaccination, regular physical activity, eating healthily, limiting alcohol consumption, reducing sun exposure and avoiding tobacco.

Spread the word about World Cancer Day 2010.

  2. I had no idea, but thanks for the heads-up! I seem to always be a day late & a dollar short on catching up with things.

Yes, these days everyone has been touched (and not in a good way) by cancer. I agree that a lot of it is one's lifestyle & choices. However, I'm just not going to give up my wine in the evenings. It keeps me sane...
